The Nexplanon® implant is a small plastic rod that keeps you from getting pregnant for up to 3 years. It's about the size of a matchstick and goes just under the skin on the inside of your non-dominant arm (So if you're right-handed, it would go in your left arm).
The implant releases a hormone called progestin, which does a few things to keep you from getting pregnant: 1. It stops the egg from leaving the ovaries. 2. It thickens
The implant works really, really well. In fact, other than abstinence (not having sex at all), the implant is the most effective form of reversible birth control out there! It's over 99% effective: so if 100 women use the implant, on average less than one will get pregnant within a year.
A doctor or nurse can put the implant under the skin in your upper arm. They will numb the area before they put it in. The process takes only a few minutes, and most people say it hurts less than getting your ears pierced. Only a doctor or nurse can insert or remove the implant.
Once a doctor or nurse inserts the implant, you don't have to do anything! You are protected from pregnancy until you decide to have it removed, or for up to three years. Just make sure that you always use condoms if you have sex, because the implant does not protect against STDs.
No, absolutely not. So definitely use a condom every time you have sex so that you are protected from pregnancy AND sexually transmitted infections.
No problem! You can get the implant taken out by a healthcare provider any time you want, and as soon as it is out you'll be able to become pregnant again. If you got the implant through our services, we'll pay to have it taken out - so it's still completely free for you. Just call us at 901-320-STEP (7837) to set up an appointment.
You can set up an appointment with one of our doctors or nurses to talk about the IUD or implant, or you can head over to our contact page to ask one of us!
